More Information about “The Eagle of the Ninth”

Hello visitors,

As always thanks to Phil for keeping me updated on this! Here is some information about Jamie’s upcoming film The Eagle of the Ninth.

I’ve never met a movie that Kevin Macdonald made that I didn’t like — Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland, One Day in September, his new one, State of Play.

So when I heard he’d landed the job of directing the Roman Empire epicThe Eagle of the Ninth, I wanted to hear more from him personally on this fin de siecle piece about a legendary “lost legion.” It’s based on a 1993 novel.

“It takes place in Roman Britain in the second century,” MacDonald said. “All the Romans will be American, all the Celts will be Scots and it’s about the friendship between a Roman legionary and his Celtic slave. They go on a journey upriver, kind of like Apocalypse Now, crossing Hadrian’s Wall, looking for the Lost Legion in the wilds of second century Scotland.

“Allegedly ‘lost legion.’ It turns out the whole legend was based on a misreading of the text. Actually, they went to Germany. But we’ll forget about that, for our purposes!”

Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell are the two names being floated as the leads for the film, which is due out next year.
