Filming Begins for “The Eagle of the Ninth”!

Hello everyone,

Just a bit of production news for The Eagle of the Ninth! The production started filming back on the 24th August, and is taking place in Hungary and Scotland. Thanks to Philip for linking me up with the information!

Filming begins today [August 24th, 2009] on the Roman epic adventure The Eagle of the Ninth, directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald and produced by Duncan Kenworthy. Shooting entirely on location in… Hungary and Scotland, the film is co-financed by Film4 with Focus Features, which holds worldwide rights excluding U.K. free-TV.

The cast is headed by Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the upcoming Dear John), Jamie Bell (Defiance, Jumper), two-time Golden Globe Award winner Donald Sutherland, and Mark Strong (the upcoming Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood). Mr. Macdonald is reunited on the new film with Jeremy Brock, BAFTA Award-winning screenwriter of his 2006 film The Last King of Scotland, who has adapted the screenplay of The Eagle of the Ninth from Rosemary Sutcliff’s classic novel of the same name.

Kevin Macdonald will bring to film pre-Celtic clash of the cultures

Hello everyone,

I do apologise for the lack of updates here but news on Jamie has been on a low at the moment. However, thanks to Philip, I have some news on Jamie’s latest production The Eagle of the Ninth.

The Roman legions who manned Hadrian’s Wall faced a warrior tribe they never managed to conquer. That much we know. But who were the mysterious people they confronted, and how did they manage to hold off the might of imperial Rome?

That is the challenge that the film director Kevin Macdonald has set himself in his latest film, The Eagle of the Ninth, to be shot in Hungary and Scotland later this year. After award-winning films such as Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland and, more recently, State of Play with Russell Crowe, Macdonald is exploring the story of the Roman Ninth Legion, which mounted an expedition north in 117 AD, and which, allegedly, never returned.

Whether the event — based on a 1950s’ novel by Rosemary Sutcliffe — is true or not (most historians have debunked it), the Pictish or Celtic tribes that inhabited the lands north of the wall were not only real, they were a formidable warrior race.

“The tribes that the Romans met were Celtic, as described by the historian Tacitus in his biography of the Emperor Agricola,” Macdonald says. “They may have been Picts, of course, but most of the tribes were also Celtic.”

Thanks for visiting, I hope to bring more news to everyone soon.

“Eagle of the Ninth” to be filmed in Glasgow, Scotland!

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the lack of updates around here; I was overseas in the last week and prior to that there was not much Jamie Bell news anyway. However, today Philip sent me an email informing me that Jamie’s newest film production, Eagle of the Ninth, will be filmed primarily in Glasgow, Scotland!

… the movie will be directed by Kevin MacDonald, will also star Jamie Bell and Donald Sutherland, and is going to be based in Glascow, Scotland.

More specifically, Suuded confirmed that this August the production (which held an extras casting call earlier this month) will be based at Film City Glasgow. In addition to providing production office space, the facililty boasts the country’s first Dolby theatre, a new filming studio, rehearsal space, and state of the art sound and picture editing suites. It’s Scotland’s new campus for the independent film and media industry and is located within Glasgow’s historic Govan Town Hall.
